Too Many Worries

Three swans sped across the pond, splashing the surface with their wings as they went. Was this to scare off predators, or is it the way they bathe? I really don’t know. I have been too concerned about what has been happening with our economy to be able to make much note of it.

Lovely Queen of the Meadow is in bloom all up and down our walk. This is an herb that is supposed to be good for helping to heal any number of health problems. But when I hiked past it, I was too concerned over the stories of our young men being called back home to be ready to control so-called terrorists within this country, to look to be able to enjoy it.

Three sparrows sat on the park bench across from where I stopped to rest, and flirtatiously preened themselves in the sunlight. Then, as with one mind, like a flock of children at play, they flew off to see what was under a near-by bush. But I was so concerned over the loss of jobs in this country, that I could not find the peace that I might have found otherwise.

Three young mothers with brand new babies pushed them in strollers down the walk as I trudged home. The infants were adorable, as all infants are, but I could find little peace when I saw them, as I was wondering what sort of world those children would grow up to experience. Instead I found myself shuddering.

End of the world doomsayers have been with us for so long, and they have been consistently wrong. The world has not imploded on itself, and the Second Coming has never happened, at least not in the manner that those prophets were predicting. However, those people who sit down to look at the historical data and then compare that with our present situation have seldom been far wrong. What makes these things harsh is that we have nearly everyone from the top down predicting a wretched future for all of us. Cheney, our Vice President, may be nothing more than a highly deluded old man as he digs his bunker. But, he is in a position to see, understand and direct the political and financial scene, not only in this country but around the world. And he believes he needs to do dig that bunker in deep.

So, whether or not the doomsayers are right, the best we can do is learn how to take good care of each other, for we will all have to work together to survive.
